The city on the Vistula River, for five centuries the capital of Poland, has a rich history, offers traditional hospitality and was granted the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture in 2000. Its Old Town with the Wawel and the Kazimierz district were placed on the first World Heritage List, created by the UNESCO in 1978 – among just 12 most valuable objects in the world back then and alongside the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Wall of China. The Main Market Square is the largest medieval square in Europe – it was laid out when the city received its charter in 1257.
Kraków has a population of over 800,000 today and is the most famous and most visited city in Poland. It is a centre of scientific, economic and social life and is the seat of one of the oldest universities in Europe, the Jagiellonian University. Kraków universities, academies and colleges provide higher education to nearly 180,000 students.
Kraków has numerous tourist attractions which make the time in the city very enjoyable. In the evenings, visitors are drawn by the unusual ambience of its cafés, pubs and restaurants where they can not only have a delicious meal, but also relax in beautiful interiors.
