WELCOME ADDRESS

Prof. Michael Wells
ESP President 2009 - 2011
The European Society of Pathology, in collaboration with the Polish Society of Pathologists and the Chair of Pathomorphology of the Jagiellonian University, has the pleasure to invite you to the Intercongress Meeting to be held in Kraków, Poland from 31 August to 3 September 2010.
Kraków, the former capital of Poland, is one of the largest and oldest Polish cities. It has traditionally been the centre of its academic, cultural and artistic life. In 1978 Kraków’s historic centre, which includes the Old Town, Kazimierz Jewish Quarter and Wawel Castle, was included in the list of World Heritage Sites.
Every year more than seven million visitors enjoy the unique charm and beauty of Kraków. The Jagiellonian University, the oldest in Poland, was founded in 1364 and remains the leading research and teaching centre of Poland. Pathology has been studied since the beginning of the XIX century, and the Chair of Anatomic Pathology was formally established in 1851. Since then it has become one of the most important pathology centres in Poland. With its unique combination of charm and academic prestige, Kraków provides a unique setting for scientific exchange, renewing old friendships and making new ones.
The Meeting will take place in the Auditorium Maximum of the Jagiellonian University. The venue, equipped with state of the art technical facilities, is located only ten minutes of walking from the Market Square – the historical heart of the city. The meeting will consist of keynote lectures held by distinguished speakers, symposia, working groups sessions, slide seminars, free papers and poster sessions. The enormous progress in all fields of biomedical research including pathology, the accumulation of new knowledge and the growing specialisation in our discipline requires overviews but also in depth tutorials and practice oriented sessions where knowledge and technology can be integrated. The main goal of the Meeting is to promote academic progress in our discipline and to set standards for diagnostic practice.
Kraków, located in the very centre of Europe, between the West and East, will be the perfect place where pathologists of our continent and beyond can meet and exchange ideas and experience. The congress’ social programme will allow participants to immerse in the vivid and fascinating life of our town. We look forward to welcoming you to the Intercongress Meeting of the ESP in KRAKÓW.
